Washington DUI
Criminal Penalties
Loss of Freedom
Washington State DUI criminal penalties
vary depending on the offense and the prior DUI convictions. The
minimum jail time for any DUI conviction is 24 hours. A judge may give a
DUI sentence of up to 365 days. The mandatory minimum sentence may be
enhanced if a breath test is refused. If related charges, like vehicular
assault or vehicular homicide, are involved, the sentence could be much
longer.
Loss of Driving Privileges
Washington courts can also suspend
or revoke driver's licenses. This is apart from DOL suspension. A judge
could suspend or revoke a driver's license even if the DOL doesn't.
Installation of Ignition Interlock Devises
If one is convicted of DUI in Washington, the court may order
that the driver's vehicle be equipped with an ignition interlock device.
An ignition interlock device is a breath test machine that is wired to
the ignition of your vehicle. To start you car, an alcohol-free breath
sample must be provided.
